Classic Car Show

NEC Birmingham, October 2006

Click image to view GalleryThe growth in the number of classic car clubs along with the public’s interest in motoring has seen the demand for classic car events surge with thousands of clubs holding rallies on a regular basis. The Classic Motor show at the NEC, organised by Clarion Events is the UK’s biggest and best classic motoring event.

For Congo Blue Design, the event provided a fresh challenge – no lingerie models here, just some attractive old motors! Our brief was to design a stage that could present a variety of cars, game shows and informal chat sessions.

The resulting solution was a 600mm high stage that the cars approached and exited via a pair of 2.4m x 6m ramps in the back stage area. As they approached the top of the ramp, a motorised roller blind lifted to reveal the car as it entered the stage, another blind created an exit in the same way. The stage could accommodate cars weighing up to 2000kg and enabled a turning circle of 14 metres.

A split level section of the stage with a raised podium enabled presenters to sit and discuss the cars as they drove by.

With safety a key factor, we inspected the stage twice daily for structural strength – over 50 vehicles were presented in the course of the three-day show and the stage performed faultlessly throughout!

As usual, Congo Blue Design provided a complete ‘feature Stage’ package, including rigging, lighting, sound and video in addition to the stage and set.

A big thank you to our client Tracey, we really enjoyed building this feature and look forward to working with you again!

Pictured is Congo Blue Design’s own vehicle on the stage – while not a ‘Classic’ car the two-ton pick up provided the ideal test for the completed stage.
