This was our first outing for Sparks, the charity for children. Although most of the charity’s fundraising is based around sporting events, the Annual fashion show is growing in prestige and importance. This year the venue was the auspicious Guildhall in London hosted by Kate Thornton.

Congo Blue Design only had a single day for the entire operation – get-in, build, rehearse, show and strike. Despite the tight schedule a fairly ambitious set with an 18 metre catwalk was employed, together with a full lighting, sound and video package.

In order to raise funds, Sparks took full advantage of new technology with guests able to bid on silent auctions using wireless handsets. This meant that the video facilities had to be designed so everyone could clearly see how their bids were performing! We provided a pair of 3m x 2.3m projection screens at the front and additional 42” plasmas to infill the back of the room.. Multiple sources came from a live DV camera, several laptops and a pair of DVD players.

As the Guildhall is a very long room with high ceilings, we used a distributed audio system using 6 stacks of our GAE 122T’s, The sound was crystal clear and extremely punchy for the up-beat fashion show segments.

Lighting consisted of open wash from 32 Source Fours, colour from our 16 LED colour Bricks and movement from 10 Robe Colourspot 250 ATs. Our lighting designer, Rich, was tested to the full as the styling of the models took longer than expected, resulting in no dress rehearsal… he really did a great job busking the show!

Every once in a while you do an event for a very worthwhile cause and this was that job. The people at Sparks were great and they do a terrific job for children who really need their help.
